Trade deals with content creators: how it works

Lucian Calistru·Updated on 2 augustus 2026

A trade deal is a collaboration where a business compensates a content creator with a product, dish or service instead of money (internationally also called barter). In return, the creator makes reels or photos about the business. It is the most common form of collaboration between local businesses and micro creators.

In short

  • In a trade deal you exchange a product or service for content, without a media budget.
  • Agree clearly up front what you give and what you get.
  • Pin down the rights: who may post the content and where.
  • A free product can be a taxable benefit for the creator; mention that honestly.

How a trade deal works, step by step

A trade deal starts with the business. You describe what you are looking for, for example a reel about your new menu and what you give in return, for example lunch for two. Creators who are interested apply and you choose who you work with.

Then you settle the details: the format, the number of shots, when the creator visits and by when the content must be ready. The creator visits, makes the content and posts it. On Plekt the work appears on the business's profile and builds your reputation along the way.

What you can offer as a business

The compensation must have clear value for the creator. For hospitality that is often food and drinks, for a shop or webshop a product, for a service business a treatment or credit. Be specific: "a menu worth 50 euros for two people" works better than "something tasty".

The stronger your offer relative to what you ask, the more and better creators show interest. If you ask for a lot of content or exclusivity, offer proportionally more.

Rights, agreements and pitfalls

Pin down who may use the content. Do you want to post it on your own channels, does the creator post it on theirs or both? Agree that before anyone starts, so there is no discussion afterwards.

Also keep the tax side in mind. A free meal or product in exchange for content can be a taxable benefit for the creator. Plekt is not a party to the agreement and gives no tax advice; mention this honestly and let creators check it themselves when in doubt.

Frequently asked questions

Is a barter deal not just working for free?

That depends entirely on the agreement. It is working for free when the value is out of proportion to what is asked, or when the real scope only becomes clear afterwards. So agree up front what you get, how much content you make, when you visit and where the business may use it. With that in place it is payment in kind, and you judge the offer the way you would judge an amount of money. Without it, skip the deal.

What does barter mean in influencer marketing?

Barter means trading: a business gives a product, dish or service and the creator makes content about it. No money changes hands. It is low-threshold and suited to local businesses without a media budget.

Is a trade deal free?

No money goes to the creator, but free it is not: you give a product, dish or service with real value. Count that value as your cost of the collaboration.

Does a creator have to pay tax on a free product?

Possibly. A free product or meal in exchange for content can be a taxable benefit. It depends on the creator's situation. Plekt gives no tax advice; have it checked when in doubt.

How do you avoid problems in a trade deal?

Agree everything clearly up front: what you give, what you get, the format, the deadline and the rights to the content. Keep communication in one place, so the agreements can be found back. On Plekt that runs through the in-app chat.
